Bloodstock agent Tony Riley has made a few shrewd purchases for patrons, securing along the way the likes of the brilliant speedster Sunera (GB), voted the champion sprinter in South Africa a season back. Among more recent acquisitions through this agency is the Northfields (USA) filly Alpine Silk, sired north of the line before the import of both her sire and dam.
Alpine Silk (SNL) who was signed for at R110 000 from the Price Brothers' select sales crop at the 1985 National Yearling Sales, is becoming an increasingly valuable breeding prospect through an impressive track record.
With two wins and a third in four juvenile starts, she came out first time at three to run second to record-breaking Jungle Class in the Gr2 Golden Slipper at Clairwood. Back in the Cape she won the Diana Stakes (WFA) and the Gr3 Majorca Stakes before running second to Honey Bear in the Computaform Stakes Gr2. It was then back to Natal for the present winter season. Fourth in a B division first time out this year, Alpine Silk (SNL) then ran second in the SA Fillies Sprint Gr2, third in a desperate finish to the SA Fillies Guineas Gr1 and a similar placed finish in the Gr1 Natal Oaks.
Garden Province Stakes
The filly closed out her second term of competition in impressive style in registering a long overdue major stakes success, cruising to a comfortable victory in Greyville's Gr1 Garden Province Stakes over 1600m. It was the thirteenth race of her career for five wins and only once out of the placings for R128 280 in earnings.
Terrance Millard was bidding for his fifth straight win in the race, having scored with Diorissimo (USA) in 1983, Up The Creek the next two years and Ecurie (Arg) was favoured to make it a repeat win and at the head of the straight, it appeared that the race lay between the Argentinian-bred stable companions Gran Corredora and Ecurie. But Garth Puller had got Alpine Silk (SNL) into top gear when heads were turned for home and the filly closed rapidly down the inside to collar the leaders 200m out. Running on smoothly, Alpine Silk (SNL) drew away for a length victory over Gran Corredora (Arg) with Ecurie (Arg) three parts away third.
