South African breeders, whether on the course or watching TV, cheered Sea Warrior as he galloped relentlessly into the wind up the Milnerton straight to win the Richelieu Guineas holding off the Argentinian ?invaders'.
Bred by the Koster Brothers from their American stallion, Complete Warrior, his family in tail female traces back six generations to a most successful broodmare, Senora, bred in 1914 by Senseless out of Desmora by Desmond out of an American mare Favora by Himyar. Senora bred 11 winners of 90 races, her first 4 runners contributing 61 of them. Her daughter, Cara Mia, only won once but bred sic winners, her daughter, an earlier Carpathia winning 6 races.
Carpathia also bred many winners, her best filly being Sylvania, a regular performer in the top division and winner of 10 races and her best colt the classic winner, Casanova. The latter, bred at Klavervlei by Ralph Koster's resident stallion Dramatic II won the Free Handicap at Clairwood, the Guineas at Greyville and the Natal Derby off the reel.
Although she was a full sister to Sylvania, Carpathia's filly Tatra by Marcius was useless for racing but a successful broodmare. A mating to the Two Thousand Guineas winner was a very close inbreeding to Tourbillion with only two free generations (2×2). It produced Bonne Femme, a winner and fourth in the Natal Fillies Guineas and she, in turn, produced a couple of ?black type' winners. It also produced Spicy Co-ed, who was as useless on the racecourse as her dam but she was a good dam of winners and dam of dams of winners. She clicked well with the homebred stallion Savonarola, who raced in the black and white stripes of his breeder. He was a good horse who had the misfortune to appear in the same year as Sea Cottage. Nevertheless, he smothered the field in a slow run Richelieu Guineas. He came from the wonderful sire producing line of Sister Sarah and mated with Spicy Co-ed produced Fast and Fit, winner of 8 races including the Diamond Stakes, Big Sky who also win 8 races including the Michaelmas Handicap and the good filly Carpathia, unfortunately named after her third dam, who won the Flamboyant Stakes and was third in the Natal Oaks. Her first foal was a filly by Gatecrasher than won two races at three. Her next foal was Sea Warrior by Complete Warrior, a mating to her own sire line with Nasrullah appearing twice in the fourth remove of the Guineas winner.
