Mordaunt Milner for SA Racehorse - March 1987
Elliodor (Fr) brought a beautiful pedigree to this country. He is a son of Lyphard, who has claims to be one of the best sons in the world of the dominant Northern Dancer, while his dam, Ellida, is an own sister to the champion racehorse Busted, winner of the Eclipse, in which he beat Great Nephew and Appiani, and of the King George and Queen Elizabeth Stakes. One might have looked a little askance at the cross of Crepello and Vimy as perhaps having too much stamina for this country, and indeed Ellida did win over two miles in Ireland. However, the mating that produced Elliodor (Fr) was an inbreeding to Court Martial 3×4, the source of speed in Lyphard's pedigree.
Elliodor (Fr) only ran three times making his appearance when running third in a race for newcomers at Longchamp. These sort of races, like the Wood Ditton at Newmarket, always attract useful company. He then went down by only a short head at Evry. On his final run he started at odds on and won a maiden race comfortably at Longchamp. At first glance, his form was not as good as some other horses that have come to this country, but it must be realised that, with his classic pedigree, he might not be expected to excel at this stage of his career. He had the very useful but not brilliant Timeform Rating of 114 and to have earned this rating having only run in maidens shows how impressive he must have been and, indeed, Timeform stated that they expected him to make a very smart three-year-old.
Elliodor (Fr) is a great acquisition to South Africa, especially as an outcross to our store of mares with Hyperion blood.
Model Man was bred by Colin Cohen at Odessa Stud and comes from a family founded by the imported Ailis. This was a very speedy filly who raced for Sir John Robinson. She won seven races including several top divisions (few races had names in those day) at Kenilworth and Milnerton. She produced five small winners. Her daughter, Otomie, was not one of them. Otomie ran three times as a two-year-old. She did not appear the next season and her best effort at four was to run second in a maiden at the Vaal for which she started favourite. She did better at stud than she had on the racecourse and produced five winners, the best of whom were United Nations and the filly True Beauty. United Nations was a regular performer in the Cape winning six races over the same number of seasons and being placed 24 times.
True Beauty, who raced for Very Noakes, was a useful filly over a middle distance, all her three wins being over nine furlongs. She ran third to Armageddon and Fleet Diver in the Boland Breeders, which was pretty useful form for a maiden. She won her first race at Kenilworth the next season and then at Milnerton. She was first past the post in the Ladies Mile over seven furlongs, but an objection by the stipendiary stewards was upheld and the race awarded to that good mare Night's Desire.
Her most important victory came the next season when she started favourite with Cleansing for the Constantia Handicap at Kenilworth. She gave Cleansing 16 pounds and beat her by a head with Fleet Diver third 3 ½ lengths away. True Beauty, whose only foal was the useful Top Model, died the next season. To lose a good racemare whose only produce could run was a sad blow for Odessa Stud; just how tragic is now fully realised with the performance of Model Man.
Top Model is inbred to the Derby winner Blue Peter 3 x 4. She won her maiden at odds-on at Kenilworth as a two-year-old in February. She showed great improvement on her previous form when running second to Electra in the weight-for-age Victress Stakes at the back end of the season. This improvement was not sustained the next year for Top Model had a disappointing second season running several times, her best being a third in a graduation. At four, it was a different story and she won four times. At stud she had two winners before Model Man, the best being Paris Fashion by Prince Tor (GB), who won a couple of races as a two-year-old. She went to Zimbabbwe where she was a regular runner in the top division winning four races and finishing second in the Borrowdale Stakes over 2000m and third in the Queen Elizabeth Stakes over 2400m, both weight-for-age races.
